Life has taken me through many countries, cultures and traditions, all of which have immeasurably enriched me and made me who I am. When very young, long before I set out on my travels, I loved reading folk tales from many countries, a love that has continued throughout my life and still endures today. Β Australia was the land of my birth, childhood and education to university.

The next nearly 12 years were spent in Asia, 8 years in Japan, where I studied for a M.Ed. in Japanese language, then worked as a translator and interpreter. I explored much of Japan and its civilisation, especially its temples and shrines. I also ventured to Korea, Taiwan, Mongolia and parts of mainland China. The Indian subcontinent next claimed my heart for 3 years of work and travel, including a short stint teaching in mountainous Pakistan, close to the Afghanistan border.

I travelled on to the Middle East, receiving much kindness from perfect strangers, then spent 2 years in the UK and continental Europe, partly studying holistic therapies, partly working with an NGO whose mission was reconciliation. I went with that NGO to South Africa, where I lived for 9 years, and came in contact with traditional healers and diviners. After returning to Australia 9 years ago, I spent a short time with an Aboriginal community near central Australia, helping to edit a dictionary of the local language from extensive material that one man had compiled over 25 years.

Now I focus on internet activism and making new friends through social networks, through whom I deepen my understanding of areas I have visited and learn about other regions and traditions to which I am drawn. I also do inner and distance work, for individuals, groups of people and the Earth.

TaffyTaffy (Robert) Seaborne

Taffy (Robert) Seaborne was born (1944) and raised in Wales before emigrating to Australia in 1967. He has enjoyed a wide variety of life experience in mechanical engineering and supervision of state forests, national parks and indigenous Aboriginal lands, including Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park Australia’s most well known indigenous icon (1990 to 1998).

It was Taffy’s experience of living and working among the Anangu traditional owners of central Australia that formed his present world view and values and that eventually led him to studying Social Ecology at the University of Western Sydney UWS/NSW Australia. It was at UWS that Taffy gained his Master of Applied Science degree and met his partner to be Glenys Livingstone.

Since 2000 Glenys and Taffy have built and now hold sacred space – namely their PaGaian Moon-Court, at their home in Springwood NSW for the purpose of celebrating the seasonal wheel of the year and practicing as an open community, their earth based Goddess spiritual practice.

In recent years Taffy has been able to find what he calls a plausible political story that is indeed compatible with his PaGaian spiritual practice. Β http://malpataffy.com/2013/12/

쑰이Giuseppe Rositano

Giuseppe Rositano studied Anthropology in the United States. He studied Spanish in Mexico and has worked as an interpreter in the Spanish language. He lived in Spain and France where he engaged in various endeavors. He has lived on Jeju Island for 7 years and decided to make a documentary about the island in order to further explore its outlying villages. While looking for ghost stories and other traditional tales he realized the preservation of Jeju musok was an important topic and pursued making a film on the theme. For Giuseppe, exploring the shrines of Jeju is like being present at the ancient shrine rites of Europe, except that on the island these rites are still alive, if just. It is a critical time in the sphere of traditional religions, for record-making and the evaluation of human faiths.

“I would like to contribute something on behalf of Jeju Goddesses whose histories are wounded. That is because, only when we begin to understand the suffering of Goddesses in old times, can today’s women be liberated. I plan to begin the task by composing a poem about their stories. I anticipate that my encounter with Mago Academy will encourage me to do so.”

“Hello, I am Kimi Kim. I am preparing a novel that decodes the messages of Jeju myths. Owner of Moon Light Bookstore, a space of the book forest lighted by the mythic moon light. It is a bookstore of humanities studies focusing on the three themes; myths, Jeju Island, and environment. Β With the conviction that myths need to be grounded in reality, I have nested in Gangjeong Village, a symbolic space for such. Β It is my pleasure that the Mago Pilgrimage coincides with the opening of my Moon Light Bookstore. Look forward to your gift of abundant light befalling on the bookstore. I am awaiting.”

Synopsis

LONG VERSION

At Search for Spirits on the Island of Rocks, Wind and Women is a discovery documentary filmed over a period of a year and a half on Jeju Island, South Korea. The filmmaker, Giuseppe Rositano, chose five shrines to investigate. The film focuses on themes such as the Jeju musok tradition, the shamans (심방) related to the shrines and particularly instances where shrine tradition is kept by villagers despite the fact that the spiritual leader of the village, the shimbang, is deceased. Giuseppe and his team went out to the villages to collect the stories from the villagers themselves. The stories are told in their words. The locations include μ‚Όμ–‘, 화뢁, ν‘œμ„ , 상귀리, 내도동 and ν† μ‚° villages. The theme of prejudice against the village of ν† μ‚° and its snake totem tradition is also explored. Jeju musok is a religion which is decreasing in practice as new cultural ways have moved onto the island. The documentary seeks to preserve the spirit of these beliefs through the voices of its followers and practitioners. The documentary is an adventure story, filmed by an individual who is both “out of place” and “in place”. Giuseppe has lived in Jeju for 7 years.
