(Day 6) 2020 Nine Day Mago Celebration

Welcome to 2020 (5917 Magoma Era) Nine Day Mago Celebration! See Words of Invitation by Dr. Helen Hye-Sook Hwang and other details here or continue to read.

Day 6: Who is Chiu, the Shaman Warrior Queen Mother? Chiu was the 14th successor of Goma, the founding Shaman Queen of the nine-state Danguk confederacy (3898 BCE-2333 BCE). As a pre-patriarchal Shaman Queen Mother of the Danguk confederacy of Nine Hans, Chiu reigned in the late third millennium BCE. In the mytho-history of Old Magoism, Chiu stood as a hera who delayed the arrival of patriarchal monarchy (ancient China) about four centuries (until the rise of Yao) or about seven centuries (until the establishment of the Xia dynasty c. 2070 BCE-1600 BCE) depending on how one sees the establishment of Chinese patriarchal monarchy. She was known for having invented, among others, metal armors and weapons (the machine of multiple arrow-shooting archery) for the first time in history and employed the cetacean military strategy to crush the opponents. If Goma was the compassionate Shaman Queen Mother, Chiu was the fierce Shaman Queen Mother. The ancient world possibly remembered Goma and Chiu together as Nine Mothers (the ninth mother and her eight daughters). While Goma was the queen mother representing the nine-state confederacy, Chiu was one of Goma’s eight daughter-states queens. Goma is juxtaposed with the nine-forms of Durga, whereas Chiu is with Kali, the fierce mother of Durga’s nine forms. What distinguishes Chiu from Goma is her warrior persona. The Goma icon would be the nine-headed Gwaneum (Guanyin) or Gwaneum surrounded by nine dragons, whereas the Chiu icon would be the nine-headed dragon or phoenix invincible by any force. The latter (the nine-headed dragon) is associated with Chiu’s ferocious nature, possibly indicating her bronze head-gear, a thing that the contemporary never saw before. A hera is made by her time. Chiu, coming about a millennium after Goma, faced the task of subduing the challenge of patrilocal military leaders, the forerunners of ancient Chinese emperors. The world did not see the establishment of a patriarchal monarchy yet in the time of Chiu. Chiu did not fight a patriarchal emperor. There was no such title or figure as the (male) emperor or king in her time. Unlike the account of Sinocentric myths and historiographies that Chiu was killed by Huangdi, Chiu suppressed the rebellion of Huangdi (Yellow Emperor). The battles of Tangnok (Zhoulu) that Chiu fought against Huangdi 73 times for 10 years were likely remembered (as a matter of fact, commemorated) as the victory of Chiu, the Warrior Queen Mother, who led the matricentric united force, constituting not only her 81 Sister Queens of the eight daughter-states but also the power of the natural world represented by whales. The forthcoming patriarchal world trembled in fear of Chiu. Thus came the icon of Chiu as a nine-headed beast/woman. Ancient Koreans celebrated Chiu as the state-protecting warrior Queen Mother throughout generations. The dragon in the nine-headed dragon, which is told to have been slain by patriarchal heroes of the ancient world (see the nine series of “The Nine-Headed Snake/Dragon Slain by Patriarchal Heroes“), is no ornamental symbol. The dragon is a symbol of the cetacean divine. In short, the dragon symbol bespeaks both Goma and Chiu as Cetacean Magoist Queens. We will return to the discussion of Magoist Cetaceanism, what it is and how it manifests in religions, cultures, and customs, for the coming last three days.

Below is my introduction to the topic of Goma and Magoism for a monthly meeting of Magoist Studies Salon:

Chiu, the Magoist Shaman Warrior Queen, and the Nine-headed Snake/Dragon: Chiu is a misrepresented Shaman Warrior Queen Mother of Old Magoist Korea/East Asia, Danguk (3898 BCE-2333 BCE). As the 14th Sovereign of Danguk, the confederacy of nine states, Chiu is commemorated as the Shaman Warrior Queen Mother who invented metal armors and weapons for the first time in history and crushed the precursor of ancient Chinese patriarchal rulers, Huangdi (Yellow Emperor). She was feared by her patrilocal rebels, while worshipped as the fierce state-protector by pre-patriarchal Magoist Koreans/East Asians. Her iconography includes the nine-headed snake or dragon and the warrior mother with a fierce-looking/draconic face, often confused with “Dokkabi (Goblin).” As a successor of Goma, the foundering Shaman Queen Mother of Danguk, Chiu faced a direct upheaval from patrilocal leaders, future Chinese culture heroes, and implemented a military campaign against them. She is best noted for the classic war against Huangdi, the Battle of Zhuolu (Tangnok in Korean) in which she fought Huangdi 73 times for 10 years. In myths, she is depicted as “a giant beast” who was aided by her 81 “brothers” from Nine Hans. Chiu’s association with the nine is, although often conflated with, distinguished from Goma’s nine symbol in the manner that the former involves a battle scene, whereas the latter manifests as the non-violent merciful heavenly queen mother. Chiu holds key to the erased history of Old Magoist Korea/East Asia during the period when the patriarchal ancestry of imperial Chinese rulers took shape as well as the state-protection practice of Magoist Cetaceanism. We will examine (1) how Chiu is depicted as the fierce draconic protector in Korean culture and the nine-headed snake/dragon in Chinese myths; (2) how the Chinese mytheme of demonizing Chiu, that is, the patriarchal hero slaying the nine-headed snake or dragon, is adopted by other peoples (the Japan, the Greek, and the Christian European), and (3) how the nine forms of a fierce female deity manifests across cultures including Medusa and Ambika (Durga or Chandi).

Please address your comments and questions as comments below or in the FB group, Nine Mago Celebrations. If convenient, email is available (magoacademy@gmail.com). I will respond and discuss the point with you.

2020 (5917 Magoma Era) Year 3 Nine Mago Celebrations

Dates July 29-August 6 PST (the 9th month the 9th day according to the Magoist Calendar, given the variation of time zones)

Theme Embrace the Dragon, the Messenger of the Cetacean Divine

Words of Invitation by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang, Ph.D.

Mago Academy announces this year’s event of Nine Day Mago Celebrations! It has been a blessed journey since last year’s Nine-Nine Day (the ninth month and the ninth day) according to the Mago Almanac (13 month 28 day Magoist Calendar)! We will be thanking for the blessings that we are given for nine days! Join us in the nine-fold litany of our love and gratitude to Mago, the Great Mother!

It is the 9th year since we Magoists found each other and voiced out to the world in the Mago Circle, the Facebook Group, and the Return to Mago E-Magazine (https://www.magoism.net) in 2012. And today we are witnessing in pain and suffering that the whole world is undergoing a massive change by the yet-expanding course of the Covid19 pandemic on a global scale, which may be seen as nature’s due response to patriarchal advancements. You may have seen me as a writer/advocate/indie-publisher of the topic of Goddess feminist activist spirituality for the last few years. Thus far, thanks to our Mago Work volunteers and authors, we have planned and published four collective writing books (the She Rises trilogy and the Celebrating Seasons of the Goddess). You are correct, if you understood what Magoism is about through these collective books and venues. However, I must say that what you have seen is only the broad implication of Magoism, the Way of the Great Mother/Creatrix.

The focused or core implication of Magoism is yet to come! From early this year, I began to speak up on the core implication of Magoism. The monthly Magoist Studies salon meetings were launched from January of this year. Soon after, I began to offer Reading the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem Capital City) online course. The Budoji, the principal text of Magoism, is essential for us to assess the core implication of Magoism. As I said, what I have said and written for the last 20 years is only footnotes of the Budoji!

Here is a sign of the time for us. Timing is marvelous, as if my focus on the direct implication of Magoism that began in January of this year was designed to cope with the forthcoming Covid19 pandemic. Almost all schools are closed down and teachers teach students online. Economic activities have slowed down. People shop online. People don’t travel or even don’t talk to each other in the manner we used to for fear of spreading the virus. People stay home and do home-related projects. These are the kind of unprecedented changes that we did not foresee coming. As a whole, the Mago Work was designed to be carried out through online activities, while connecting people and the natural world as the Mago Descent in the first place. I am thankful for this unintentional but time-brought readiness. The mode of my advocacy for Magoism (public and online, based on the free social media tools) is ready for the Covid19 pandemic time and thereafter. It is my hope that the physical place for The Mago Academy Center and the Magoist Cetaceanism Research Center here where I live in Southern California, USA, can serve our post-Covid19 person-to-person meetings.

Amidst the colossal change that we are undergoing, we are having this year’s Nine Day Mago Celebration. And it is the ninth year of the Mago Work. I hope we can reflect back the path of Magoism in public and revisit major themes and accomplishments through a post per day for nine days. The invitation was there for you and is here again!

Check out the theme: Embrace the Dragon, the Messenger of the Cetacean Divine. We are tying knots with Magoists, the dragon, and whales among us. I have laid out nine messages for nine days. And on the last day, we will open the Mago Bookstore for 48 hours for you to download some books for free.
